With all of the mergers and changes to the cable TV providers and consolidators there is one constant, that is simply the use of digital TV recorders.  With the advent of simpler and larger storage capacities these handy units are becoming a  favorites item in the homes of millions of people.

So let’s talk about some of the features of various digital TV recorders that are available.  Then later in this website, or should I say, on other pages of this website we will cover in detail some of the features and benefits of various makes and models that you can choose from.

To use digital TV recorders is to enjoy more time freedom as to when you can view your favorite TV programs, movies or sports at your leisure.  Pause it, speed it up, slow it down, whatever you would like to do.  No more waiting for the program to come on when you desire.  It is just a matter of setting up some settings and then going on about your own business, come home and watch your favorite program. 

You can even skip the advertisements. 

Keep in mind that unless you have a twin tuner for digital TV recordings you will not be able to record one TV program while watching another.  So in order to accommodate this way of viewing and recording at the same time a twin tuner is going to be necessary.

If this is what you chose to do then stick with either the same brand with a button to switch between the TV and the digital TV recorder or choose two separate brands where you will have to have two separate and distinct remote control units in order to work your system.

Storage

To store in HD or not to store in HD, that is the question, or one of the questions anyway.  Just keep in mind that if you are going to use one of the available digital TV recorders you will have a choice of recording HD or not.  The HD is great and with all TVs headed in that direction I would encourage you to record in this mode.  Some of the models out there will allow for a remote or accessory storage device to be connected to the unit thereby increasing the capacity of recording data.  This is an important feature if you are planning on using HD because the capacity is greatly increased to whatever accessory then is connected to your digital TV recordings device.  I f you see models that seem unusually cheap, it may be due to the fact that there is a minimal amount of storage capacity built into the unit itself. 

Make sure that the digital TV recordings device that you are looking at provides an easy access on the screen when you are searching for the file that you want to play. Some of the models out there are not what I would consider user friendly.  If you need to call a technician to help you this is not the right model to buy.  For a few extra dollars, or for a little extra time.

So with the advent of great digital TV recorders there is no more need for storage cabinets full of VCRs and CDs that we cannot find what we are looking for.  To make sure that does not happen to you be sure to categorize your digital TV recorders files in a way that you can find them back.  With a 2 terabyte external hard drive now for under $100.00 there is not one single reason that you cannot keep your files indefinitely to watch that favorite movie or show or even a game whenever you please.

Also, make sure that the digital TV recordings device can accept an outside device for storage as well as download.  Even if you are not thinking at this time for this feature, this is a feature you want to have, chances are down the road real soon a friend will call and say lets watch a movie and it will be in a digital format when they come on over.  Without this port your viewing opportunities may be greatly limited.
